Introducing DB Pro: The Modern Database Desktop App

Jay FreemanJay Freeman

Today, we're thrilled to introduce DB Pro—a desktop app built from the ground up for modern developers, startup founders, and data professionals. In this blog post, we're ready to share what we've been building for the last few weeks, and where we're going with DB Pro.

Why We Built DB Pro

Over the years we've worked on many products, be it web or mobile, that use a database. 99.99% of the time any product will. The database is the backbone of any modern product. Your product data, user data, metadata, and payment data are stored in your database.

Sometimes you want to just easily access this data to understand what's going on (Professionals will call this business insights.) or to action something. Maybe you need to send the top 10 active users of your product to your sales team every Monday. How would you do this now? Write the script and manually run it? Share the script with the sales team? They have no idea what a SQL workbench is. Shouldn't this be easier?

But, if you've ever used one of the many current database workbenches available, you'll understand that viewing, editing, understanding and exporting this data from your database is much harder than it should be.

It's 2025 and there has to be a more powerful way to wrap around your database.

What Makes DB Pro Different

🚀 Beyond Basic Queries

Most database tools are little more than a query editor. DB Pro goes further, combining all the essentials with modern features that let you truly work with your data.

  • View, edit, and manage your data across PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, MariaDB and more
  • Modern, distraction-free UI designed for speed
  • Built for developers, startup founders, and data teams alike

⚡ Triggers

Triggers let you react to database changes in real time—no more polling or manual checks.

  • Fire events when rows are inserted, updated, or deleted
  • Notify your team instantly via Slack, email, or webhooks
  • Kick off automations and workflows the moment data changes

🤖 AI-Powered: Speak to Your Data

DB Pro gives you the ability to query your database using plain English, with full transparency and control.

  • Ask natural questions like “Show me the top 50 paying customers last month”
  • DB Pro translates your intent into safe SQL/Mongo queries
  • Always see and approve the generated query before execution
  • Perfect for non-technical teammates who need answers quickly

📓 Notebook-Like Reports

Inspired by Jupyter Notebook, but purpose-built for databases.

  • Combine queries, charts, notes, and commentary in one interactive document
  • Share reports with colleagues or keep them local
  • Great for analyses, write-ups, or investor updates

📊 Built-in Dashboards and Visualisation

Turn raw data into insights without exporting to another tool.

  • Create charts and graphs directly inside DB Pro
  • Build tailored dashboards for different teams or use cases
  • Pin live widgets to your desktop
  • Export visualisations as images or PDFs
  • Auto-generate dashboards with the help of AI

⚡ Workflow Builder

A drag-and-drop flow editor that automates the boring stuff.

  • Schedule queries to run at specific times
  • Export results to CSV, JSON, or Google Sheets automatically
  • Trigger workflows from database events or on demand
  • Connect to external services using webhooks

📂 CSV and JSON Management

Handle flat files with ease, no matter the size.

  • Import CSV and JSON files straight into your database
  • Validate data before loading to avoid broken imports
  • Export query results in multiple formats for sharing
  • Optimised for large datasets without memory crashes

🧪 Test Data Generation

Create sample data instantly for development or demos.

  • Populate tables with realistic user profiles, orders, logs, and more
  • Control dataset size and shape for performance testing
  • Keep production data safe while still working with “realistic” values

🏎 Benchmarks & Performance Testing

Know exactly how your database performs under stress.

  • Run read/write benchmarks with one click
  • Compare performance across different queries
  • Identify bottlenecks before they become outages

🧩 Visual Query Builder

Build complex queries without writing SQL by hand.

  • Drag and drop tables, filters, and joins
  • See the live query preview as you build
  • Perfect for those learning SQL or moving quickly

📜 Query History

Never lose your work.

  • Automatic versioning of every query you run
  • Tag and organise important queries for future use
  • Roll back to earlier versions when needed

📑 Logs

Keep a detailed record of what’s happening inside DB Pro.

  • Track queries, imports, exports, and workflow runs
  • Audit-friendly logs for compliance
  • Filter logs by user, database, or time window

🗺 Visual Database ERD Designer

Understand your schema at a glance.

  • Generate entity-relationship diagrams from your database automatically
  • Edit relationships and schema visually
  • Export diagrams for documentation or onboarding

🔌 API Generation

Turn your data into services instantly.

  • Generate secure REST endpoints from queries or views
  • Control access via keys and roles
  • Share data with other apps without building a backend

🔒 Security First

Your data security is our top priority:

  • Strict guardrails around AI
  • All connections encrypted end-to-end
  • Local storage with optional cloud sync
  • Role-based access controls
  • Audit logs for compliance

Supported Databases

DB Pro will launch with support for PostgreSQL and MongoDB, with other databases coming soon. What we're planning on supporting eventually:

  • PostgreSQL (launch)
  • MongoDB (launch)
  • MySQL
  • MariaDB
  • SQLite
  • Redis
  • Microsoft SQL Server

What's Next

This is just the beginning. As you can see, we have an incredibly ambitious roadmap ahead but we're confident we can ship a workbench miles better than existing apps out there. DB Pro will be free until we get to a feature rich version.
